Science

Our first inspirational person this year is Stephen Hawkings. He was a brilliant theoretical physicist who made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of black holes and the nature of the universe. His work, including the discovery that black holes emit radiation (now called Hawking radiation), changed the way scientists think about the cosmos and its origins.

Our second inspirational person is Mae Jamison. She is an engineer, physician, former NASA astronaut and the first African American woman to travel in space. In addition to her space mission, she has contributed to science by promoting science education and inspiring future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Science Curriculum Intent

At St. Anne’s Primary School, we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. Our science curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning and enable them to build upon it, allow them to experience the challenge and enjoyment of science and facilitate them to see how their learning is relevant and valuable to their past, present and future. As one of the core subjects taught in Primary Schools, we give the teaching and learning of Science the prominence it requires.

The scientific area of learning is concerned with increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and with developing skills associated with Science as a process of enquiry. We will encourage children to hypothesise, design and conduct their own scientific investigations to support their ability to work scientifically. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. In addition to this, the School Values are interwoven in to all our science teaching in order to promote positive attitudes which will give children the skills and desire to be independent, responsible learners. Teachers create a positive culture for learning and reinforce high expectations that all children are capable of achieving in science.
