Schools have an important part to play in the detection and prevention of child abuse. Parents should be aware, therefore, that where it appears to a member of the school staff that a child may have been abused, the school is required to report the matter to the Social Services Department immediately. Consequently, in such situations, it is likely that the parents will be contacted by a social worker and not by the school.
